process

We bring deeper layers of well-being to the design conversation, blending with your program and aesthetic. How? We listen — to what is said, and unsaid, by designers, clients, and the land.

The health needs and priorities of every client are unique, but our fundamental objectives are to identify and minimize avoidable, negative stressors and recommend features that support occupant well-being and the project as a whole.

OUR METHOD
WITH CLIENTS
WITH DESIGNERS

We consider the physical and metaphysical, emotional and energetic impacts of design. Our intake, process and recommendations harness science, intuition, alternative healing practices and the qualities + patterns of the natural world, anchored to the realities of building and budget.

In addition to more standard methods, we apply the wisdom of Wu Xing [the Five Phases/ Elements], a Taoist system dating back thousands of years and still used today in Chinese Medicine and Feng Shui. The Elements [Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water] provide a logical archetype system that serves as an assessment and prescriptive tool when applied to people, spaces and activities, offering a time-tested system for balance. And, conveniently, relate to building materials and features. For those who would like to learn a bit more, please visit this blog post.

We bring a vibrant heart, creative spirit and grounded approach to every project.

Decades of experience supporting the well-being of clients, complemented by accreditation in current wellness building standards gives us unique depth and perspective in Wellness Design consulting.

Our intake includes gathering information relating to the wants, needs and uses of the space, intentions and health objectives, past/ current/ potential imbalances, assessment of the land, and more nuanced information that can reveal deeper layers.

We are sensitive to clients’ varying levels of privacy and the importance they place in energetic, spiritual and metaphysical components, and adjust our process accordingly. Often, we are told more than we ask.

Although some services can be applied to any stage of a project, Wellness Design offers the most benefits when incorporated from project start.

Level of involvement during the design process varies, but projects frequently begin with a client intake, project assessment, and initial report with recommendations. Throughout the project we review and redline drawings, and update recommendations based on changes in the direction. Here is an example of a full-service scope of work.

Recommendations may impact :

  • site plan
  • floor plan
  • landscaping
  • furniture layout
  • lighting/ fenestration
  • color + material selection [for material health and/or Element considerations]
  • appliances [HVAC, filtration]
    ….and more
